This box came from my Grandaddy’s house. I love how he corrected what was in the box every year way back to 1979. Remember Thalheimers? I remember walking by the doors at the Thruway on a hot day. When the doors would open and close, you’d get a whoosh of cool air that had the most wonderful smell. It’s smelled like a new nightgown.

Laura had a really cute holiday party, girls only! We played a pretty dirty game of dirty santa. Involved calling someone’s 7 month old a “damn baby”. Don’t worry, the baby’s mom got what she wanted in the end… she played it just as dirty. Take a look at Laura’s adorable house. She lives about a block away, but it looks like about 40 years away.

Last year I found the poem my G’daddy loved to read every Thanksgiving in place of the standard “Come Lord Jesus our guest to be… “

Now, I’m not so religious, but R.L. Stevenson goes there, and then gets to the rest of the pretty stuff in just the right amount of time for me. Keeps it nice and simple. Anyway, I’m still thankful for all the same things last year, all the things mentioned in this poem so perfectly, and that my brother will be here with us too. And this Thanksgiving I’ll mostly be thinking about my neighbor Jackie who has just lost her husband. He was a very young 53.
